I have been fishing out at the Sheeps Bridge area of the upper Deschutes recently and despite the crowds there are still a fair number of fish to be caught, including some nice browns and rainbows. It seems that the most popular method has been fishing a heavy stonefly type nymph below an indicator with a smaller nymph or egg fly dropped off the back of the stonefly. There are some deeper pools that you can see fish stacked up in that are perfect for nymph fishing. I have also had a lot of luck throwing streamers on a sink tip against the far bank and then retrieving them back to me. If you’re wanting to throw streamers look for a fly that is going to sink fairly quickly such as the Clouser Minnow or Sculpzilla as these fish oftentimes will be found in deeper water that can’t be fished with an unweighted fly. This is a great spot to fish if you are hoping to hook into a big brown or rainbow, but get after it as this area closes at the end of the month.

Make sure that if you fish the Cascade Lakes area, you bring along some bug spray.
