Layers for Winter Fishing

Our guide to keep you on the water longer this winter.

Staying warm and comfortable during winter fishing is essential for both safety and enjoyment. The key to successful winter layering is understanding how to manage moisture while maintaining warmth.

Start with a moisture-wicking base layer. Synthetic materials or merino wool work best, as they pull sweat away from your skin and help regulate body temperature. Avoid cotton, which retains moisture and can make you feel cold.

Your middle layer should provide insulation. Fleece or synthetic insulation works well, providing warmth without excessive bulk. This layer traps air to keep you warm while allowing moisture to escape.

Your outer layer should be waterproof and breathable. A quality wading jacket or shell protects you from wind and precipitation while allowing perspiration to escape. Look for features like sealed seams, adjustable cuffs, and a high collar.

Don't forget your extremities. Quality gloves, a warm hat, and thick socks are essential. Consider neoprene waders for additional insulation, and layer appropriately underneath. Hand warmers can be a valuable addition for particularly cold days.

The key to effective layering is the ability to add or remove layers as conditions change. You'll generate heat while walking and fishing, so being able to adjust your layers helps maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the day.
