Custom Hand-Tied Leaders at The Patient Angler: Saltwater, Streamer & Sink-Tip

New custom hand-tied leaders are in the shop at The Patient Angler—built in-house for saltwater, streamers, and swinging sink-tips, with decades of on-the-water testing behind every taper.

Custom hand-tied leaders are now in the shop at The Patient Angler—built in-house for saltwater, streamers, and swinging with sink-tips. If you've ever fished a mass-produced tapered leader that wouldn't turn over right, didn't have the shock strength you needed, or just didn't match how you actually fish, these are built to fix that. Every one is hand-tied here at the shop, not pulled off a factory spool.

Custom hand-tied saltwater, streamer, and sink-tip leaders from The Patient Angler

20# Saltwater Leader

Our saltwater leader is a hand-tied bimini twist braided leader with a built-in taper and shock absorption, tied with 20# clear saltwater mono. It's the go-to leader for hundreds of saltwater gamefish species and pairs well with sink-tip or full-sinking lines. This isn't a recipe we just came up with—it's the same leader owner Peter Bowers has tied and fished for over 40 years, refined on real saltwater trips rather than a drawing board.

Streamer Leaders — 15# and 20#

For streamer fishing, we hand-tie custom tapered leaders built with Fluorocarbon Strong shock tippet: a 25# butt section on the 15# leaders and a 30# butt section on the 20# leaders. That heavier butt section turns over big, wind-resistant streamer patterns and stands up to hard, aggressive eats. These are the go-to leaders for tiger trout, bull trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, and any other piscivorous fish that eats meat instead of bugs. They're built to fish with full-sinking lines, sink-tip lines, or specialized streamer tapers like the Outbound Short.

Sink-Tip Leaders

Swinging flies for steelhead and salmon calls for a different taper altogether. Our sink-tip leaders are custom hand-tied mono tapered leaders built specifically for sink-tips and sink-tip lines, designed to turn over cleanly off the business end of a compact head without fighting the sinking portion of your line. Whether you're swinging soft-hackles, intruders, or traditional steelhead patterns, this is the leader that keeps your fly fishing at the right depth and angle through the swing.

Why hand-tied matters

A factory tapered leader is built to be good enough for everybody, which usually means it's not great for anybody. Hand-tying lets us dial in butt diameter, taper length, and shock material for exactly how a leader is going to be fished—whether that's a saltwater flat, a big meaty streamer swing, or a steelhead run. These tapers have been tested and proven over decades on the water, not just on paper.
